The main aim of the class is to explore concepts in the scientific method, in addition to reading and writing papers in the class. Students in this course are not expected to have a special knowledge of any science; however they are expected to learn about different sciences by gaining knowledge of the topics covered in class. Students will be taught to analyze data, develop a hypothesis and test and interpret the results obtained.

There are many ways by which students can demonstrate their knowledge and acquire a passing grade in the course. Students in this class will be required to read and write scientific papers. Students are encouraged to read more than one scientific paper each semester. The more they read, the more they understand the subject matter.

Students will have to read and write papers according to the instructions given to them for each class. Each class will assign a set of essay topics to be read and analyzed. The topics are selected from the subject areas of the entire course. The topics are selected in such a way that the student will gain an understanding of how science related literature relates to the topic.

Writing papers in class will involve reading scientific papers on topics such as plant biology, evolution, earth sciences and marine biology. There are two methods of writing papers in this course. Firstly, students have the option to choose an essay topic and write their own papers on that topic. Secondly, the teacher may choose randomly or by lot from the students composing the paper.

There are two methods for grading the papers. The students may either present their papers anonymously or they may choose to leave their identity and grade the paper themselves. Students may also earn marks for each paper they read and understand completely. Students are allowed to present their own opinions, but the opinions of other students on the same topic cannot be considered. The teacher has to consider the main point of the topic when considering the marks for a particular paper.

The second type of paper is the graded summary. This type of paper is presented for the purpose of understanding the paper more thoroughly. This type of paper normally presents data and interpretations and conclusion. Students are not required to analyze the data. Summarization and interpretation of facts are what makes the summary of a paper.

Students may be asked to read and reply to brief questions during the process of completing the paper. Answer choices may either be anonymous or directed to specific individuals in the class. Students are not required to research on their own. The teacher must consider the main purpose of the paper before presenting it. Students are encouraged to read the paper and then answer the questions they believe are important. Once the paper has been thoroughly reviewed, the students may either accept or reject it.

In order for a student to complete an acceptable paper, there are several things that should be accomplished. There are many types of science papers and each requires a different set of requirements. For example, biological paper requires additional research than geology paper. Understanding the requirements beforehand will help students prepare to submit the paper. This will ensure that the paper gets an acceptable grade.
